Class of 2011

Picture of FLS partners watching the OBS auction.

We're back from Ocala where we attended the April Ocala Breeders Sale (OBS) auction. We purchased 3 more two-year olds; colts by Songandaprayer, Congrats & Touch Gold.

We spent $240,000 and were sold-out in a matter of hours. These babies are now two-year olds in training.

Now it's time to introduce our new horses

All of our offerings sell out in a matter of hours. Our last juvenile for the season will be purchased in the May Fasig-Tipton Timonium sale. It was May 2008 that we uncovered R Betty Graybull for $60,000. She became an immediate darling of the stable as she won the prestigious $200,000 NATC Futurity Stakes and followed that up with a 2nd to Just Jenda in the Brandywine Stakes. In 10 starts she has won more than a quarter of a million dollars. The year before we placed 2nd in the NATC Futurity with Cobra Strike. And this year Uptowncharlybrown and Joyce's Angel has burst onto the national scene.

ImageWe've been blessed 4 years running in that we have uncovered 4 stakes horses without spending large sums of money. The difference between us and the larger partnership's is they BUY already made stake horses for millions of dollars. At FLS we develop our own.

We get a line on these precocious youngsters long before the public's aware of their talent. We meticulously scrutinize every move these youngsters make. It's much more important to watch their action in how they move and travel, especially as they gallop out, rather than focus on their actual time.

ImageMost consignors to obtain the highest price for these immature babies force them to work really fast before they're really ready to do so. Some consignors push these babies to their maximum limit. Often we watch sadly as they youngsters appear as if they're on their hands and knees trying to run that hole in the wind.

This is not good as many are physically and mentally not prepared to do so. You need to weed out the pretenders from the contenders. For some, this auction is their Kentucky Derby, as sadly, they'll never even make it to the races. Before finalizing our short list of prospects, over 90% of the horses listed in the catalog are summarily dismissed for a variety of reasons.

We watch hours upon hours of slow and stop motion of videotape before narrowing our short list of prospects down to a precious few. On the second day of the auction you can expect sale prices to skyrocket to the stratosphere.

Why? Because suddenly owners are afraid of coming home empty-handed. The pent up money seems to burn a hole in their pocket. Horses purchased as yearlings just a few months earlier for a mere pittance, perhaps $50,000 or less, are suddenly bringing upwards of $500,000! Our philosophy is never to buy unless there's something that really catches our eye.

Shares in Fantasy Lane Stable offerings usually sell out within days. Each season there are potential partners shut out because they waited just a bit too long to enroll in our program. We always accept enrollment on a first-come, first-served basis.

The best way to stay on top of things is to join our mailing list. Not only do we keep our partners informed about their individual horse but we've been praised for our communication skills as we send out daily emails on all FLS horses.

As soon as an opportunity arises everyone on our mailing list is advised at the same time. We sell shares in individual horses on a first come first serve basis. We never buy horses just for the sake of buying. We have to love what we see and truly believe there's an upside. We have a very long waiting list of potential partners and hope that you decide to join us in the very near future.

The Green Monkey, retiredDid you know?

In 2005, the ten most expensive yearlings/two-year olds in training purchased collectively at auction cost $42.5 million dollars. That's an average of $4.25 million per horse. As two-year-olds, take a wild guess how much these magnificent "can't miss sure things" earned collectively? Would you believe this entire lot earned an incredulous $172. No, we're sorry to report, there aren't any missing zeroes!

The Green Monkey, whose $16-million price was the most ever for a Thoroughbred sold at public auction, has been retired from racing. The 4-year-old son of Forestry stands at stud at Randy Hartley and Dean De Renzo’s Hartley/De Renzo Thoroughbreds near Ocala, Fla.

Hartley and De Renzo consigned The Green Monkey to the 2006 Fasig-Tipton Florida select sale of 2-year-olds in training at Calder Race Course, where he worked an eighth of a mile in :9 4/5. The colt’s buyer at the world record amount was Irish agent Demi O’Byrne, who held off Sheikh Mohammed’s bloodstock manager, John Ferguson, in an intense bidding battle.

The Green Monkey raced three times for Susan Magnier, Michael Tabor, and Derrick Smith. He finished third in his career debut at six furlongs at Belmont Park in September and then was fourth in a seven-furlong race at Belmont in October. In what would be his last career race, The Green Monkey was fourth in a 1 1/16-mile turf event at Hollywood Park Nov. 21.

In 2009 three legendary Hall Of Fame trainers formed "The Legends" racing partnership spending $15,000,000 on unraced babies. As of the first quarter of 2010 the total return so far has been less than $1,000,000.

This proves:

First, that there are never any "sure things" in racing. And, secondly, if you think throwing ridiculous sums of money at horses will guarantee buying a winner, you would be sadly mistaken. Our home base is beautiful Monmouth Park where daily purses average over $1,000,000 the highest in the country. We do hope that you decide to join us this upcoming season to partake of all the fun and excitement.
