We're back from Ocala where we attended the April Ocala Breeders Sale (OBS) auction. We purchased 3 more two-year olds; colts by Songandaprayer, Congrats & Touch Gold. We spent $240,000 and were sold-out in a matter of hours. These babies are now two-year olds in training. |

All of our offerings sell out in a matter of hours. Our last juvenile for the season will be purchased in the May Fasig-Tipton Timonium sale. It was May 2008 that we uncovered R Betty Graybull for $60,000. She became an immediate darling of the stable as she won the prestigious $200,000 NATC Futurity Stakes and followed that up with a 2nd to Just Jenda in the Brandywine Stakes. In 10 starts she has won more than a quarter of a million dollars. The year before we placed 2nd in the NATC Futurity with Cobra Strike. And this year Uptowncharlybrown and Joyce's Angel has burst onto the national scene.
This is not good as many are physically and mentally not prepared to do so. You need to weed out the pretenders from the contenders. For some, this auction is their Kentucky Derby, as sadly, they'll never even make it to the races. Before finalizing our short list of prospects, over 90% of the horses listed in the catalog are summarily dismissed for a variety of reasons. We watch hours upon hours of slow and stop motion of videotape before narrowing our short list of prospects down to a precious few. On the second day of the auction you can expect sale prices to skyrocket to the stratosphere. Why? Because suddenly owners are afraid of coming home empty-handed. The pent up money seems to burn a hole in their pocket. Horses purchased as yearlings just a few months earlier for a mere pittance, perhaps $50,000 or less, are suddenly bringing upwards of $500,000! Our philosophy is never to buy unless there's something that really catches our eye.

In 2005, the ten most expensive yearlings/two-year olds in training purchased collectively at auction cost $42.5 million dollars. That's an average of $4.25 million per horse. As two-year-olds, take a wild guess how much these magnificent "can't miss sure things" earned collectively? Would you believe this entire lot earned an incredulous $172. No, we're sorry to report, there aren't any missing zeroes! The Green Monkey, whose $16-million price was the most ever for a Thoroughbred sold at public auction, has been retired from racing. The 4-year-old son of Forestry stands at stud at Randy Hartley and Dean De Renzo’s Hartley/De Renzo Thoroughbreds near Ocala, Fla. Hartley and De Renzo consigned The Green Monkey to the 2006 Fasig-Tipton Florida select sale of 2-year-olds in training at Calder Race Course, where he worked an eighth of a mile in :9 4/5. The colt’s buyer at the world record amount was Irish agent Demi O’Byrne, who held off Sheikh Mohammed’s bloodstock manager, John Ferguson, in an intense bidding battle. The Green Monkey raced three times for Susan Magnier, Michael Tabor, and Derrick Smith. He finished third in his career debut at six furlongs at Belmont Park in September and then was fourth in a seven-furlong race at Belmont in October. In what would be his last career race, The Green Monkey was fourth in a 1 1/16-mile turf event at Hollywood Park Nov. 21. In 2009 three legendary Hall Of Fame trainers formed "The Legends" racing partnership spending $15,000,000 on unraced babies. As of the first quarter of 2010 the total return so far has been less than $1,000,000. This proves: First, that there are never any "sure things" in racing. And, secondly, if you think throwing ridiculous sums of money at horses will guarantee buying a winner, you would be sadly mistaken. Our home base is beautiful Monmouth Park where daily purses average over $1,000,000 the highest in the country. We do hope that you decide to join us this upcoming season to partake of all the fun and excitement. |
